The Best Vacation Sunglasses of 2026: 8 Designer Frames Worth Packing
A vacation puts more direct sun on your face in ten days than most people get in three months at home — and it's usually the trip where good sunglasses get scratched, stretched or lost. Here are the eight designer frames we'd actually pack in 2026, grouped by the kind of trip you're taking.
Four things that matter before you buy
- UV400 is the only non-negotiable spec. It blocks effectively 100% of UVA and UVB. Every authentic designer frame has it; cheap sunglasses often don't — and a dark lens with no UV filter is worse than none, because it opens your pupil wide and lets ultraviolet straight through.
- Tint changes what you see. Grey keeps colours true and is the safest beach all-rounder. Brown and amber lift contrast. Gradient lenses cut overhead sun while still letting you read a menu.
- Polarized isn't the same as dark. Polarization kills glare off water and wet sand — a real upgrade on a boat — but it adds no UV protection and isn't standard on every luxury frame. Check the lens description on the product page.
- Check the three numbers inside the temple arm. Something like 60 □ 14 145 — lens width, bridge, temple length in millimetres. Match them to a pair you already love and you'll never order the wrong size.

Beach and boat
Tom Ford Bronson FT1044. Our most-requested men's frame two years running, and the one we'd take anywhere. A 60mm oversized pilot with a double bridge that stays put on a damp nose, and a discreet metal T on the temple instead of a loud logo. Choose shiny black with grey lenses for the safe version, striped brown with blue for something warmer, or black with yellow lenses for contrast in hazy light. At 60mm it's genuinely large — narrow faces should size down.
Fendi FFM0039. A slim metal aviator is the most forgiving shape there is: it suits nearly every face, works on men and women, and there's very little of it to break in a beach bag. The FFM0039 is $280, the easiest yes on this list — or take the mirrored monogram version if you'd rather the sunglasses did the talking.
Pool and resort
Miu Miu MU A51S. Rimless is having its biggest moment since the early 2000s, and this is the frame people search for by name. With no acetate rim it's feather-light on the nose and casts no heavy shadow in photos. Take the pale gold with light blue lenses or the light pink version. One caveat: rimless is the most delicate construction in eyewear. It's a pool-lounger, not a jet-ski frame.
Saint Laurent SL M119 Blaze. Every trip has a dinner where you want to look like you tried. The havana with gold hardware is our best-selling women's frame overall and it does golden hour beautifully — a sculpted cat-eye in warm tortoiseshell that reads richer as the light drops.
City breaks and sightseeing
Celine Triomphe. The Triomphe arc is the most recognisable quiet-luxury signature in eyewear right now, and medium, structured frames work hardest on a walking holiday. The metal version is the more travel-friendly: CL40254U in silver is cooler-toned and excellent with navy and white, while CL40254U in gold with green lenses is the classic that sells out first. If you want more presence, the acetate versions give you the same line in a heavier material — CL40238U in tortoise for warm weather, CL40308U in shiny black if your wardrobe never needs matching.
Long-haul flights and packing light
Gucci GG0307S — it folds. This is what we recommend to anyone who has ever sat on their sunglasses in an aeroplane seat. The temples and bridge collapse so it packs down to roughly the size of a phone, in its own compact case. The crystal-studded browline photographs brilliantly, but the real argument is that it survives being thrown in a tote. Available in clear crystal, grey and blue — and at $329 it's the most affordable frame here from a house at this level.
Choose in 30 seconds
- On or near water? Bigger and darker — Tom Ford Bronson or the Fendi aviator.
- By a pool with a camera nearby? Light and warm-toned — Miu Miu A51S or Saint Laurent SL M119.
- Walking a city? Medium and structured — any Celine Triomphe.
- Short on space? Foldable — Gucci GG0307S.
- Narrow face? Stay at or under 55mm lens width. Wider face? 58–60mm will sit properly instead of pinching.
Three habits that keep them alive
- Never rest them on your head in the sun. Heat plus stretch widens the temples permanently — the most common way good frames die.
- Rinse with fresh water after the beach. Wiping a dry, sandy lens is how you get fine scratches.
- Fly with them, don't check them. Hard case, carry-on.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need polarized sunglasses for the beach?
You don't need them, but you'll notice them. Polarization cuts glare off water and wet sand, which reduces squinting over a long day. UV protection is the part that matters for eye health, and every authentic designer frame has it. Days on a boat — look for polarized. Mostly under an umbrella — a good gradient lens is lovely.
Are darker lenses more protective?
No. Tint depth and UV protection are unrelated. Buy on the UV spec, then choose the tint you like.
What size sunglasses should I take on holiday?
Match the numbers inside the temple arm of a pair you already like. With no reference: 52–55mm lens width suits most faces, 58–60mm is an oversized look.
How do I know designer sunglasses are authentic?
Authentic frames carry the brand name, model code, colour code and size numbers etched inside the temple arm, plus a CE mark and country of manufacture — most luxury eyewear is made in Italy or Japan. They arrive with a branded case, cloth and authenticity card. Every frame we sell ships with its original packaging.
Pack the right pair
The best vacation sunglasses aren't the most expensive ones — they're the pair that matches the trip you're taking, fits your face, and protects your eyes for the eight hours a day you'll be outside in them.
