Smart Glasses Are the Fastest-Growing Thing in Eyewear. Here's What That Actually Means

    The most interesting story in eyewear this year isn't a frame shape or a runway moment. It's that the fastest-growing product in the category is, technically, a computer.

    The numbers are hard to argue with. Smart glasses without displays grew 167% year over year in the first quarter of 2026, shipping around 2.25 million units in three months — close to the entire volume of 2024, in a single quarter. IDC expects 13.6 million units for the full year.

    We sell sunglasses, not electronics, so we've watched this with more curiosity than commercial interest. Here's what we think is actually going on, and what it does and doesn't mean if what you want is a good pair of sunglasses.

    Why it worked this time

    Smart glasses have failed repeatedly for over a decade. Google Glass in 2013 is the famous one, but it wasn't alone. The technology was never really the problem — the problem was that people wouldn't wear them.

    What changed is who's making them. Meta's partnership with EssilorLuxottica — the company behind Ray-Ban and Oakley, and the manufacturer behind a large share of licensed designer eyewear — put the product in the hands of people who have spent a century working out what a face will tolerate. It also put it into optician shops, which is where people already go to buy glasses.

    That combination gave Meta roughly 69% of the smart glasses market as of Q1 2026, per IDC. The nearest competitor holds about 3%. It's less a competitive market than one company with a head start and a very good manufacturing partner.

    The lesson is one the eyewear industry has known for a long time: nobody wears something because it's clever. They wear it because it looks right.

    The display versions are still small — but growing fast

    Most of that volume is camera-and-audio glasses with no screen. Glasses with an actual display in the lens are a much smaller category: TrendForce puts AR glasses at around 950,000 units for 2026, up 53% on last year.

    Small, but the direction is clear. TrendForce has Meta revising component orders upward twice within six months of launch — one waveguide supplier's order went from 80,000 units to 150,000. Their 2030 projection is over 32 million units, with Samsung and Google both expected to enter.

    Prices are heading the way volume usually pushes them. Average selling prices are forecast to fall from roughly $376 today to around $229 by 2030.

    Why they all look the same

    Here's the part that interests us most, because it's a design story rather than a technology one.

    A smart frame has to hide batteries, cameras, speakers, and increasingly a light engine, inside something that sits on a nose. That imposes hard constraints. Temples have to be thick. The front has to carry weight without pinching. Rimless is impossible — there's nowhere to put anything. Fine metal is impossible for the same reason.

    The result is that nearly every smart frame on the market converges on the same silhouette: a chunky acetate wayfarer or a slightly rounded variation of one. Not because designers ran out of ideas, but because physics only permits so many shapes when there's a computer inside.

    Which makes what's happening in the rest of eyewear more interesting by contrast. The strongest movements in designer frames right now — rimless, ultra-fine metal, sculpted geometric acetate, oversized flat-front shields — are all things a smart frame structurally cannot do. The two categories are diverging, and the design space is splitting rather than shrinking.

    What this means if you just want sunglasses

    Very little, and we'd rather say that plainly than manufacture a threat.

    A smart glass is a device. It has a battery, a firmware version, and a support window. In four years it will be slower than whatever is current, and in eight it will be e-waste. That isn't a criticism — it's what a device is.

    A well-made pair of sunglasses is an object. Acetate doesn't get outdated. A hinge either works or it needs a screw. UV protection is built into the lens material and doesn't degrade with time. The Tom Ford or Celine frame someone bought in 2018 is exactly as good today as it was then, which is precisely why the second-hand and end-of-season market in designer eyewear works at all.

    These are different purchases with different lifespans. Plenty of people will end up owning both, and there's nothing contradictory about that — the smart pair for a run or a commute, a proper pair for everything else.

    What we'll be watching

    • Whether the luxury houses follow. EssilorLuxottica manufactures for many of them. If Prada or Gucci puts electronics into a mainline frame, the category stops being a tech product and starts being an eyewear one.
    • Whether displays get thin enough to disappear. The moment a smart frame can be built in fine metal is the moment this genuinely overlaps with designer eyewear. Nothing shipping today is close.
    • Whether people keep wearing them. Shipment figures count sales, not habits. The number that matters is how many are still on faces a year later, and nobody is publishing that.

    The short version

    Smart glasses are growing quickly, one company owns most of the market, and the frames look the way they do because of what's inside them rather than what anyone wanted them to look like. It's a genuinely new category, and worth paying attention to.

    It also hasn't changed what makes a good pair of sunglasses: real UV protection, a shape that suits your face, and build quality that survives a decade. That part is the same as it was in 2013, when everyone was certain Google Glass was about to change everything.
